How to Hire a Waterproofing Contractor

Hiring a Waterproofing Contractor

If you spy a leak in your basement, you may have to bite the bullet and hire a waterproofing contractor. Ideally, you want one who can actually help you, which means you don't run to the Yellow Pages and choose the first name in the book. No, take some time and follow this time-tested procedure (you really need some water damage advice before you get in over your head...with water).

1. Before you seek professional help, make sure that your leakage is not from sources than you can remedy yourself, such as clogged gutters or obvious cracks around basement windows or doors.
2. Ask friends and family who have hired a professional if they could recommend a contractor
3. Check with the National Association of Waterproofing Contractors at (800) 245-NAWC about any contractor you are considering hiring.
4. Interview several contractors and have each inspect your house and prepare a proposal for the waterproofing work.
5. Compare warranties offered by the various contractors.
6. Negotiate a written contract with your chosen contractor.
7. Pay any deposit called for by the contract and have the contractor begin work.

Note: When negotiating a contract try to pay as small an upfront deposit as possible. Also work out a schedule of payment that closely tracks the work in place. Insist that the contract contains your right to withhold a final payment until the job is satisfactorily completed.
